Getting Around Town in Brea ~ Brea’s FREE trolley is available for Brea’s seniors, Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. ~ 2:00 p.m.! Ride the trolley from the marked stops and head to the many shops and restaurants up and down Birch St. in the heart of town. For info call (714) 990-7175.

Health Screenings ~ FREE to Seniors are offered and the first and third Thursday each month. Free basic health care to older adults (55 and over) are available by appointment. Also available screening for hearing, blood pressure, vision and spinal Screenings, call the same number above to find out more about this FREE service offered to Brea’s seniors.

FREE Income Tax Preparation ~ Yes, it’s that time of year once again. FREE tax help for Federal and State returns is available at the Brea Senior Center. This FREE program is provided seniors and is in conjunction with AARP and the IRS. Again call (714) 990-7750

Meal Program for Home Delivery ~ Brea seniors who are eligible may receive up to three meals per weekday. Meals are delivered to home-bound who are unable to prepare them for themselves. Donations requested are $4.50 a day, based on availability and assessment of a Brea Case Manager. For more into cal (714) 990-7750

Going solo…or family ties, sharing the decision with others.     All time for some seniors moving is an absolute necessity,  while for others it could be discretionary. Maybe it’s time for you to downsize, or move to that golf community, your time  to enjoy more time in your life!  Just in case you missed it check out Moving ~ How Do You Know When the Time is Right for You? (part one of the CA Senior Real Estate series).  

So now as a senior, if your home has been the family homestead, be prepared of what may be ahead. This could be even more emotional for everyone,  not just you as a senior, it can impact the entire family.   Most adult/grown children are happy when Mom and/or Dad downsize, yet others may not be in support of your move, so it may be wise to consider other opinions.  You may want to the help of of a trusted adviser, a very close friend, clergy or professional peers. 

If you’re considering a move, make an effort to understand both sides of the issue while exploring your options.  Remember, your decision may not be a popular choice by all.  Unless you have a compelling need to make the move, it’s o.k. to delay your decision…take your time until it’s the right time for YOU.

No two of us are the same, nor is every situation the same, however there are some common situations many seniors share. Check out the list below to see some of the more typical reasons someone would decide to move,  maybe “downsizing” a living environment.  Some may appear to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, yet they’re also very real.

• House is too large, too much to take care of, you’d like less responsibility, and have more time to enjoy yourself.
• To move closer to family, see more of your grown kids and grand kids.
• To move further from the family, just too darn  much time spent taking care of the grand kids.
• Or, you need to move, to get the last kid out of the house.
• Tired of continually fixing things…wanting to maintain your independence by not relying on family and friends for  repairs.
• Maybe you prefer a more active social life, and would prefer to be around others.
• Health issues, tired of stairs,  need or prefer to have a single story home.
• Financial considerations, possibly free locked-up equity for remaining years while also maintaining other investments.
• Divorce, it can happen at  any time of life.
• Spending the kid’s inheritance and do something just for yourself for a change.  This is time for you  to enjoy the “some-days” of your life, you’ve earned it!

So if you’ve decided the time is right, explore some of your choices. Here are just a few for seniors to consider:

Smaller home or condo, less to take care of and worry about.

A “Golden Girls” home, sharing life with others.

A mobile home, financially affordable and little upkeep.

Travel time, on the road, in your motor home off to see the world.

Time for your Harley adventure on the road.

You always wanted to live in a golf community.

Adult/senior condominium development, for a more social environment.

Perhaps assisted living, that is if health issues are a concern for your or family.

Move in with family, this could help you, or may help them.
