Today’s need for help is at an all-time high. Normally food collected earlier in the year will last through the holidays, but not this year. I talked with the organization’s Director Mr. Sanchez and he explained with the high cost of food, gas and general economic conditions the need is great than ever.

As we all know it’s been a rough time for many throughout the U.S.  And it’s not just low-income families, it’s middle class families who also needing help. People in need are just becoming desperate.  I talked with the organization’s Director Mr. Sanchez and he explained with the high cost of food, gas and general economic conditions the need is great than ever.

As a families many of us have struggled at times, yet going hungry is something I can’t begin to imagine. As difficult as things may seem at times, there is always someone worse who really needs the help.

Mr. Sanchez indicated items that could be most helpful would included:

• canned meats
• canned fruit
• rice
• dry beans

He also indicated that hygiene items were also welcomed, like tooth paste, deodorant, even baby diapers were needed.

• Do you have a youth or scout troop that can help? A senior organization? Any groups that can help?
• And the next time you head to the market, pick up a few extra items for donation.

The La Habra Community Resources Care Center  is a 501-C3 Non-Profit Organization at  350 Hillcrest St. La Habra, CA 90631.

The mission style building was completed in 1920′s as the Union Pacific depot, It was later donated to the City of La Habra in1956. Today is it a focal point for youth in the city, with interactive displays. Children care involved  by touching and experiencing exibits to their hearts content.

The former Pacific Electric depot is now located  next door and today it has been converted to the Depot Playhouse featuring local productions. The city is also well known for it’s local Boys and Girls’ Club.

La Habra also became known for agriculture at the turn of the century.  The richness of the La Habra Valley continued for many years. Mid-century La Habra was known as wide open spaces just right for future development. 

Today La Habra  is an experiencing positive productive commercial growth with the development of the area at Beach and Imperial Highway, the Westridge Golf Course and the newer Costco at Beach and La Habra Blvd.  The overall development has contributed to the economic tax base of the city.

 Situated in North West area of Orange County, La Habra like many communities is a wonderful patchwork of great neighborhoods.  Not to be confused with La Habra Heights in L.A. County, La Habra is a bedroom community of primarily single-family homes on average size lots, in great neighborhoods.

La Habra Heights, is one of those eclectic areas of So Cal, so unlike so much of our cookie cutter living elsewhere in tract homes.  The “Heights” as it’s known to those who live here, is not to be confused with the neighboring city right next door of La Habra, CA.

For the record La Habra Heights is located in the L.A. County, the sister City of La Habra (again right next door) is located in the OC.

Another major difference is the make up of the city, meaning most communities have a balance of housing, residential single family, condos, apartments, some commercial and shopping, etc. etc. However not in the Heights.  The  majority of the La Habra Heights is home to sprawling estate size lots of an acre or more offering a more rural lifestyle in the city. People love it here!

Many homes dot the hillside streets or are situated the picturesque valley areas. Some are lucky enough to have a view to Catalina Island (26 miles off our coast according to the song) on the clearest days. Others may have a tranquil view the spectacular golf course.  It’s easy to see while driving through La Habra Heights the abundance of multi million dollar estates you can find, while others that may be more modest in size and price. As I said before it’s eclectic and wonderful.

Some streets appear as county lanes while just minutes away from the more urban city lifestyle. The Hacienda Golf Club located near the center of the community on Hacienda Road.  Many of the homes have views of the spectacular fairways and mature trees everywhere. The photo on the left is one I took on a Sunday in ”The Park” of La Habra Heights on Hacienda Blvd. It’s also home to the “Music in the Park” summers series on Wednesday evenings.

According to the last reported census the median household income was just over $101,000 at that time.  I would imagine by today’s standards it would be considerably higher. While the area in high in income, it’s small in size encompassing a mere 6.2 miles. The population again according to the last census was around 6,000 residents, an unknown number of horses and other (mostly) domestic 4 legged friends.

The average selling price for homes in the City of La Habra Heights  (a total of 20 homes which closed according to SoCalMLS data) was $890,800 for the first half of 2008which reflects the down turn in pricing in our SoCal real estate market Records indicate these homes sold at an average of 92% of the last asking price and 88% of the original asking price.

Pint size visitors have the opportunity to get up close and  try-on costumes of fire fighters and police officers to name a few.  The objective of this exhibit is for the kids to experience first hand the merits of being a public servant, learning the values of providing to others.

This hands-on exhibit has transformed this gallery into a mini-city with kiddie police cars and to “drive” around town.

This special exhibit just opened and runs through June 8^th. This is one you won’t want to miss. Take some time to spend with your kids or grandkids; you will be glad you did.  By the way, this place is filled with fun “hands-on” exhibits in each section of the gallery.

Complete with a merry-go-round (which runs every 1/2 hour) it’s a totally hands-on it’s also a place for youngsters to learn valuable life lessons in the Ocean Adventures on things like ecology with an under the sea exhibit.  Check out the archeology exhibit by digging for fossils and discovering burried “bones”, is another adventure.

In another exhibit there’s real live performing stage, kids dress up in a wide variety of costumes complete with hats and accessories. The scenery on the “stage” takes on a different appearance for all to see with budding set/directors at the controls in the nearby lighting booth. I’ve watched kids can spend an hour(including my own grand kids) in this one exhibit alone. And remembering youngest visitors, kids five and under, there’s a special room of exhibits just for this special age group. They can play with multiple fun things available for just the little ones. The nearby train caboose (still on the tracks, right next door to the Depot Theater) offers a look back to earlier days of the railroad coming from Los Angeles into Orange County including stops at La Habra and ending in Yorba Linda. This exhibit is open at selected time for museum. I can tell you personally the kids crawl into almost every nook and cranny of this rail car.
