Once again the football field and track at the beautiful campus of Brea-Olinda High School in Brea will play host to the 2012 Brea 24 HR Cancer Relay for Life June 23rd & 24th.
The event and activities will take place on the football field, surrounded by the “state of the art” sport track at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday 6/23 at the Wildcat Stadium just east of the 57 freeway and north of Lambert Rd. The event is primarily volunteer driven and celebrates the lives of the survivors and also remembers who who have lost their lives to the disease.
Brea’s Relay For Life like others kicks off at 10:oo a.m. with the Survivors Lap, young (age 7 & up)and old (photo at right) in their colorful purple shirts all are invited to participate in the inspiring lap. During the next 24 hours each participating team has at least one member of the team on the track through out the event, the entire 24 hours. Teams are usually comprised of family, friends, co-workers, civic groups all of which agree to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Some are in costume and some participate is “specialty” laps just to keep it more entertaining. Some teams set up their own little fundraiser bake sales, candy sales, white elephant trinkets that go on during the day.
Throughout the even you can count of a lively day of fun and entertainment that takes place by a long list of volunteers with singing, dancing, games etc. At dusk the mood changes with a moving event by hearing from a local family that has been touched by the awful disease. Afterward participants take to the track for the “luminarious” and a walk round the track in silence remembering those who’ve lost their lives to cancer.
This is the 4th year for our team Ohana Aloha, we participated and raised funds that go the the American Cancer Society. It’s always been an enthusiastic and energetic group. Many of the participants camp out over night for the entire 24 hour period. And then others like me, go home for a few winks around 10:00 p.m. and then show up again for the 4:00 a.m. shift (to do laps) while others get some sleep. As a participant I’ve visited other 24 HR Relays that have taken place in other cities and they are always a special event!
